Christine And The Queens has shared new song ‘Tears Can Be So Soft’.
The aesthetic and personal evolution of Chris continues on his new album, with ‘PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE’ landing on June 9th via Because Music.
Lead single ‘To be honest’ marked the return of this vastly original French-born creative, and ‘Tears Can Be So Soft’ continues the broadening of his audio palette.
Online now, it’s a riveting piece of music, with Chris presenting one of his most soulful vocals to date. A bravura performance, ‘Tears Can Be So Soft’ meditates on loss and the impact of grief, while providing space for light to re-emerge.
He sings: “Let me pray for my salvation…”
Chris shaped the song, and chose the initial sample, before merging his expertise with Mike Dean’s for the emphatic orchestration, thrilling layers of strings that recall the Bristol sound – think early Massive Attack – or even aspects of Portishead’s filmic inspirations.
Indeed, there’s another parallel, too – a faint echo of Massive Attack’s fabled ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ video, Chris takes to the streets of Los Angeles for the video.
He comments…
“Tears can be so soft’ was born out of the marriage of a Marvin Gaye sample that caught my attention, this intoxicating, elegant, almost poised in its melancholy string arrangement.”
To construct the finished artefact, Chris desired a sound that would create “this deep sense of almost womb-like, hypnotic space where the voice could soar in its loneliness,” an “interplay between the suffering that motivates tears and the gentle healing effect they can have.”
