Poolside has spent a decade subverting expectations. An usual talent in club culture, his slowed down, super-immersive take on disco’s outermost environs has found a cult audience, crafting neo-psychedelic soundscapes that refuse to abandon their percussive kick.
Sharing three records over 10 years – ‘Pacific Standard Time’ (2012), ‘Heat’ (2017) and ‘Low Season’ (2020) – he’s perfected the art of ‘daytime disco’, a kind of frosted, hyper-visual production sensibility. New album ‘Blame It All On Love’ finds the producer – the aptly named Jeffrey Paradise – going one further, blending his instantly-identifiable audio voice with outre aspects.
Out on October 20th via Ninja Tune imprint Counter, it finds Poolside glimpsing new heights with his work, expanding his sound while adding in finer details. Alongside this, he’s crafted a special mix for Clash, touching on some of his core influences, while also nodding to different aspects of club music.
Re-asserting his innate eclecticism, the mix opens with proto-shoegaze from Spacemen 3 before dipping into A Certain Ratio’s experimental, deeply groove-based post-punk.
Dipping into his own take on Can’s oddball hit ‘I Want More’, he leans on New York no wave with Liquid Liquid, before throwing in a moment of beauty from Arthur Russell.
Poolside comments…
“This is a mix of left field tracks that helped inspire the sound of ‘Blame It All On Love’, meticulously edited and mixed into a seamless DJ-style mixtape. From Krautrock, to No Wave, to abstract disco, proto-shoegaze and all sorts of sub sub-genres. It’s an eclectic musical journey with loose threads of audio and electronic experimentation.”
Tune in now.
