The Cure’s Robert Smith Has No Time For The Monarchy

Posted by

Robert Smith is hardly known for keeping quiet on matters important to him. Just look at the way The Cure frontman handled the North American ticket farrago earlier this year, socking it to Ticketmaster in triumphant style.

So the English musician was hardly going to let the coronation pass by without mentioning it. An ardent anti-Royalist, he shared a powerful cartoon by the artist First Dog on the Moon.

“All hail the nature arbitrary of privilege that’s hereditary,” it says. “The huge cost of this ceremony could buy each British child a pony/ Yet distracting profligacy must calm the masses all, lest we the fury of the poor unleash/ Let them eat Coronation Quiche!”

Eagle-eyed observers spotted a trend – he has not time for the Royals, or the inherited power they represent. Interviewed back in 2012, Robert Smith was asked if he’s ever pick up an honour, like so many of his peers.

“I would honestly cut off my own hands before I would go there, because how dare they presume that they could give me an honour? I’m much better than them. They’ve never done anything! They’re fucking idiots.”

Guess we won’t be seeing The Cure at the coronation concert, then.

The comments run in contrast to fellow goth icon and veteran of the dark side Nick Cave, who is actually attending the coronation itself. In a note on The Red Hand Files, he said:

I am not a monarchist, nor am I a royalist, nor am I an ardent republican for that matter; what I am also not is so spectacularly incurious about the world and the way it works, so ideologically captured, so damn grouchy, as to refuse an invitation to what will more than likely be the most important historical event in the UK of our age. Not just the most important, but the strangest, the weirdest.
