Los Angeles, CA – Among the many things Memphis rap mainstay Juicy J has become known for, his ostentatious and irrepressibly infectious ad-libs are at the forefront.
Over the years, one-off phrases like, “we trippy mayne,” and, “yea hoe,” and countless others have undergone different iterations and during The Hustle Continues rapper’s latest interview with HipHopDX, he tells the story of how Logic turned his infamous, “shut the fuck up,” one-liner into his producer tag.
“Logic is my best friend, man,” Juicy J tells HipHopDX beaming.
“We hang out all the time. We was in the studio and he was just talking. He’s like, ‘Man, what did Juicy J say? Shut the fuck up.’” We was just being funny. And I said, ‘Hey.’ I stopped it. I told the engineer, ‘You recorded that?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah,’ I said, ‘Man, I’m using that as my producer tag because that shit is hard. You talking is.’ We didn’t say, ‘Hey, Logic, go in the studio, I mean go in the booth and do this.’ He just said it and it was recording.”
Apparently, even Logic was surprised by how quickly his voice was implemented and reached out to the OG after hearing his voice all over.
“He say he didn’t think I was serious,” Juicy J says concealing a laugh.
“He said, ‘When you said you was going to use that as a tag, I didn’t think you was serious.’ He’s like, ‘Man, that shit sound hard. I’m hearing my voice every fucking where.”‘
Remarking 0n the trajectory of their relationship Juicy J says he is a fan of Logic, and initially had his management reach out to facilitate a collaboration. He claims they hit it off instantly and regularly link up to, “smoke weed,” and, “take some shots.”
“We did a record together,” He says.
“Manager reached out to his management. I would fuck with his music. I’m a fan. Like I said, I be fans of these people, listening to they music. Why not get in to do something and I like his flow. And I thought he’s a kind of artist like with Juicy J — I got this ratchet shit and Logic he come with them series bars, and I’m like, ‘Man, you put those two together, what the fuck can we come up with?’ And we just came, we bopped out in the studio and we’ve been cool ever since, we’ve been talking on the phone, and I come by, spend time with the family, chilling. We just been cool ever since, smoke some weed, take some shots.”
Along with gushing about his bromance, Juicy J also dished on his unique bond with chart-topping Texas-made rap sensation Megan Thee Stallion. He says a short time after meeting her, he actually gave her the nickname, “verse killer,” because of how quickly she would rip through his beats.
“She grew up on Three 6 Mafia and she loved Project Pat,” Juicy J reveals to DX.
“Her management reached out. I’ve been knowing her manager forever like 15 years, my dog T Farris. And so we got on the phone, we connected, she come to the studio. I had some beats and she was just going through beats. She’s like, ‘Yeah, I like this one.’ Boom, knock it out. ‘I like that one.’ Boom, knock it out. And I called her the verse killer. I said, ‘Man, you the verse killer! You killing all these mother fucking songs.’ And she put her album on hold. She said, ‘Juice, I got to get your beats.’ She showed a lot of love, man. That’s like my little sister. We just have a great friendship ever since.”
Of the seventeen tracks appearing on Megan’s debut album Good News, which landed at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B and Hip Hop Albums Chart, Juicy J produced three, including the SZA-assisted lewd banger “Freaky Girls.”
