It feels a little odd to describe Mac Wetha as making his ‘debut’.
After all, he’s a sought after figure in the London underground. Whether its working with a skate crew, jamming with a metal band, or collaborating with NiNE8 collective partners like Biig Piig and Lava La Rue, he’s got vast, impeccable experience.
Introductory project ‘Mac Wetha & Friends’ ran the gamut of these influences, affording Mac space to fully tease out his sonic passion-points.
Debut – there’s that word – single ‘Culver’ intensely cuts down the slack, a focussed, refined, and oddly addictive alt-pop jammer.
A song prompted by his first time in Los Angeles, it’s about alienation and feeling out of step, combined with the raw emotions he encountered during his stay.
Filmed by Mac Wetha and his girlfriend Daniela Monteiro, the sunrise visuals touch on the song’s gently soulful sense of uplift.
He explains: “I live next to a park, so we decided to shoot it there at sunrise. We got up at 4.30AM, had finished shooting by 6AM, and delivered the finished film by 11AM.”
