Ailbhe Reddy – Personal History

Posted by

Throughout ‘Personal History’, the debut album from this incredibly talented queer Irish singer songwriter, Ailbhe Reddy really wears her heart on her sleeve in an introspective way. ‘Personal History’ took three years to make.

Opener ‘Failing’ is catchy yet intimate. ‘Loyal’ is sincere, as are all the tracks on the album. The Dublin alt-folk artist opens herself up in her music and this track features her soaring vocals. Her vulnerability on her tracks leaves a sensational impact and none more so than in ‘Between Your Teeth’, where she describes struggling to communicate with her partner (“I think too much / I think for both of us”). ‘Walk Away’ features stunning vocals in this stripped back song which discusses confronting a fear of commitment (as did ‘Failing’).

Ailbhe actually spent a year studying psychotherapy which gave her a fresh understanding and empathy to the problems people face. Title track ‘Personal History’ shares its name with the collection of information about a person’s health and, in it, she references the film “Mulholland Drive”. Her songs are about relationships – be they with others or with herself. ‘Personal History’ is another catchy number with a powerful chorus and a heartfelt meaning. Her vocals are incredible.

Final track ‘Self Improvement’ explores living with mental health issues. “Off the meds again,” she begins. ‘Personal History’ feels more like a work of art than an album. It’s such a strong debut. Her vulnerability is awe-inspiring and relatable. Importantly, it’s an album which sounds great.

8/10
