JAB seems to thrive on undiscovered possibilities.
A multi-talented percussion who is equally at home in a DJ set or a jazz session, he’s able to blend club tropes with powerful rhythmic engines.
His 2019 cut ‘Directions’ was a fantastic aesthetic manifesto, one that Gilles Peterson rinses in his DJ sets that summer.
New EP ‘Currents’ drops on March 19th via his own imprint Joon Dada, and it’s worth aligning alongside Theo Parrish, say, or jazz crews such as Melbourne’s 30/70.
The title cut is a glorious workout, with the swooning string arrangement sitting alongside percussion that moves from left-field house to early 70s fusion.
Deft and exploratory, there’s a remarkable sense of precision and control in his work, one that is highlighted by the beautiful video.
‘Currents’ is able to soundtrack an outdoor figure skating routine, the frozen landscapes and physical control perfectly balancing JAB’s music.
He comments…
“As a percussionist there has always been a marriage between rhythm and movement/dance and as much as I love the dance-floor and club culture I also appreciate and wanted to highlight other forms of movement as it all inspires me.”
“I got properly introduced to the world of figure skating while touring with Art On Ice in 2018 and that’s where I met Sofia and so many other world renowned skaters. Just wanted to try something different and bring another perspective…”
