Chika’s Once Upon a Time EP comes on a week where the rising Alabama rapper not only celebrated her 24th birthday, she’s up for Best New Artist at the 2021 Grammy Awards on Sunday (March 14).
Speaking with Ebro Darden of Apple Music’s Rap Life, the Warner Music Group signee took time to reflect on her journey from being a slam poet to rapping and how she’s landed on Music’s Biggest Stage.
“I’m thinking about all the people in my category, and it would be a lie to say I don’t look at their success and be like, ‘now how did I end up here?’ Then I also think about the Academy and the people who are voting, and the fact that a lot of us are tapped into music. Less about the moment and more about the trajectory. Which is why the phrase ‘Best New Artist’ is a thing. It’s not ‘Most Poppin’ Artist,’ or ‘Biggest Artist of the Year,’ it’s literally Best New Artist. In that sense I’m humbled to be a part of the conversation, even before being able to tour.”
The props didn’t come just from Darden. Cardi B took time out Saturday (March 14) to salute Chika and give her two cents on the Grammys as a whole.
