DJ Drama has discussed a potential Verzuz matchup with DJ Khaled for a second time, saying he “would love to” go up against the We The Best hitmaker.
Speaking on Drink Champs last month, Khaled told co-hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN that nobody could beat him in a Verzuz battle after pointing out the number of hits he’s helped craft over the last 17 years.
“I mean, that’s facts,” the 46-year-old Grammy Award-winner told N.O.R.E. when asked about “smoking” everybody in Verzuz. “Anybody that’s ever asked me that, I always said that. I’m never backing down on that talk […] I’ve SoundClashed my whole life. I’ve been battling my whole life, trust me.”
On Friday (September 9), Drama stopped by Hot 97 to sit down with Ebro, Laura Stylez and Rosenberg, and the Generation Now co-founder doubled down on his desire to face off against Khaled if the opportunity was to arise.
“I’ve been asked about Verzuz for the last two years since even quarantine,” Drama explained. “So this is not my first time speaking on it, [but] I think this has been the most attention it’s gotten since.”
Rosenberg then began to ask Drama whether he really wanted to entertain the idea of facing off with the GOD DID producer or was it because “Khaled said he could smoke you,” at which point Drama interjected and said: “He didn’t say he could smoke me, he definitely didn’t — I never heard my name come up. You gotta ask N.O.R.E., ‘Did my name come up?’ I don’t know … I didn’t hear my name.”
After going off on a tangent to celebrate Funk Flex and his importance to the culture, Drama circled back to Khaled. “Listen, on the Khaled situation, I just want to leave it here: I’ve said my piece about, you know, I’m with all the smoke.”
“I would love to do it. It’s great for Verzuz. … I have a catalog of records, I have a catalog of projects. I have two superstar artists, Lil Uzi Vert and Jack Harlow … And this is the thing, listen, I have said Khaled’s name, let’s see Khaled say Drama’s name. I wanna see on record, someone ask Khaled: ‘What do you think about DJ Drama in a Verzuz?’
“And let me put it like this: I do nothing but tip my hat and salute to that man and his accomplishments, and the greatness that he’s done for the culture. It’s all love, it’s just competition. When we get on that court, I’m ready to bust anybody’s ass.”
Drama’s comments come after he said last month that he wanted “all the smoke” as far as Verzuz battles go, and that he believes he could defeat DJ Khaled in a face off.
Speaking on the Rory & Mal Podcast, Mr. Thanksgiving was asked: “Last question. Verzuz. Who wins? You or DJ Khaled?”
Drama replied: “How ’bout we just do it and see who wins? You can throw anybody in the mix and let’s see who wins. I want all the smoke. When it comes down to Verzuz, like what? I got a lot of cultural records. I am not to be underestimated.
“LOX put on a master class and I would do the same fucking thing if I got my Verzuz. Set it up. I really like that. I’m the full package. Nobody’s outperforming me.”
