Exclusive – DJ Kay Slay has been battling COVID-19 since December 27, and word he wasn’t doing well started circulating earlier this week. On Wednesday (January 5), Wack 100 posted an ominous Instagram caption suggesting the legendary New York City DJ was losing the fight. But according to Kay Slay’s biological brother Kwame Grayson, who spoke exclusively to HipHopDX, the 55-year-old is on his way to a full recovery.
“He’s definitely not going to die,” Grayson tells DX. That right there…I’m not going to lie, I was jumping around. I was definitely happy. Kay Slay is a private dude and he didn’t tell anybody in the hospital who he was, and we was kinda getting average treatment. When they found out who he was, that’s when everybody stepped up treatment.
“He was slowly fading away, but God didn’t let that happen. Everything in time and when they found out who he was, they got him powered up again. So he’s up and going. He’s like in a recovery state, but he’s definitely not going to die. You can trust me on that.”
DJ Kay Slay needs our prayers as he is dealing w/ health issues ❤️
DJ Kay Slay was known as Dez, a very talented graf artist in NY back in the days?
He has most recently done a project, Rolling 110 Deep, where he gave quite a few OG’s the opportunity 2 rhyme on the track ? pic.twitter.com/NKaHaXi51B

That’s not to say Kay Slay’s family wasn’t gravely concerned. There were some touch and go moments that had them on the edge of their seats, wondering if he’d pull through. But by the sound of it, he’s on the road to healing.
“All of us was freaking out,” Grayson says. “We’re his little brothers biologically. We look just like him. He does his thing, we do our thing. But he knows how we feel about him. I was talking to him before he was in the state that he was in a couple days ago — this is when he was on Instagram writing everybody back — I’m in the DM and I’m propping him up like, ‘You gotta get out of there, man. The world needs you and stuff.’
“So we’re writing each other back and I already told him once he gets better, we’re gonna come give him a hug. But he’s definitely not gonna die. I seen a lot of posts up there. It was definitely inaccurate. It was not true. He’s gonna live. He’s just in a recovery state right now.”
Rumors Kay Slay was put on a ventilator were also apparently false, although Grayson did say he was put on some kind of machine to help him breathe.
“That was not a ventilator,” he explains. “I don’t know how they thought that, but it was not a ventilator he was on. It was a machine that was helping him breathe, but it was not a ventilator. I don’t know where they get this information. He was on a machine that was helping him breathe because he couldn’t breathe. A couple of days ago, he was in a state where everybody thought he really wasn’t going to make.
“I thought he wasn’t going to make it. He couldn’t even talk. But he was slowly fading out, but God is good. He’s not going to die. They’re going to move him to a private hospital, hopefully a joint where everybody can come visit him. But he’s not gonna die. That’s not in the cards. He’s in a recovery state. He’s getting stronger. He’s gonna be alright.”
