Multi-platinum producers DJ Mustard and Hitmaka are seemingly becoming archrivals.
In multiple tweets and Instagram stories posted on Thursday (December 30), both Mustard and Hitmaka began trading shots at each other after a fan stirred the pot regarding a controversial clip from the Joe Budden Podcast. During the conversation, Hitmaka said Mustard “doesn’t want smoke” in a Verzuz while comparing “Rack City” to Lil Wayne and Rick Ross’ “John” collaboration.
The Twitter user shared the aforementioned clip with the message, “This guy @_Hitmaka must be smoking dick thinking he can beat @mustard is a Verzuz,” the user wrote. “You named one song and they laughed at you,” to which Mustard initially replied, “He’s high man.”
Things started to get spicy once Hitmaka jumped in the thread to defend himself by making a bold claim comparing their output over the past few years.
“No I ain’t,” Hitmaka wrote. “In the last 5 years since last time we worked I’ve sold more records & have more number 1’s than you. Im a light one up tho.”
he’s high man lol

Hitmaka and Mustard then attempted to outshine each other’s accomplishments. While Hitmaka was touting his impressive commercial success, highlighted by more than eight billion streams, Mustard opted to floss his Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for Ella Mai’s 2018 hit “Boo’d Up.”

Hitmaka went on to make a concrete offer, challenging Mustard to a VERZUZ battle with the added bonus of a personal wager on top of the backend bag both would receive for their participation in the event.
“Whole game talking now u took it viral might as well gone head get ya 20 @mustard,” Hitmaka wrote in a tweet. “I’m the underdog we both get high I know u ain’t ducking no [smoke emoji] We can put sum personal bread up make it interesting.”
He continued in another tweet explaining why he and his team are confident they;ve been more consistent over the last couple of years.
“Ain’t no long post of what we did this year cause it’s like bragging for working hard which is the norm,” he wrote. “Just know for the last 60 months we have been the most consistent & that’s all that matters n Jesus name.”

As Hitmaka mentioned in his retort, he and Mustard joined forces to collaborate on Meek Mill’s Wins & Losses track “Whatever You Need” in 2017.
Since then, both producers have scored major placements, including Hitmaka’s multi-platinum “Bounce Back” record for Big Sean and Mustard’s “Ballin” hit for Roddy Ricch.
