Las Vegas, NV – Doja Cat was at the center of a debate last week when Remy Ma refused to identify the Planet Her artist as a “rapper” during an interview with Drink Champs.
“I don’t think she’s a rapper,” Remy Ma said. “Let’s be clear with that. They put her in the rapper category, I don’t think she’s a rapper. But she makes dope records, and I think she’s dope.”
While some people were baffled by Remy Ma’s remarks, others wholeheartedly agreed with her.“Is Doja Cat a rapper?” one person asked on Twitter. “mmm nah wouldn’t necessarily say that however she does rap alot of verses over pop beats. Sooo gotta agree with Remy Ma. She def dope af tho.”
Another said, “Y’all have to understand where Remy Ma is coming from. She grew up in a time where artists were rapping, not singing. Doja Cat’s music is more pop than rap, and that’s a fact,” but another countered, “Remy Ma saying Doja Cat isnt a rapper just pissed me off. Bitch are YOU a rapper? What was the last song YOU released?”

On Sunday night (April 3), Doja Cat took home a Grammy in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for the song “Kiss Me More” featuring SZA at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas — not Best Rap Song, not Best Melodic Rap Performance, not Best Rap anything. So, does that settle the debate?
Rapper or singer, Doja Cat was overjoyed by her Grammy win and was moved to tears while giving her acceptance speech alongside her Top Dawg Entertainment collaborator — but not before making a crass remark about “pissing.” Apparently, Doja Cat thought she had enough time to use the bathroom before her category was called. That proved not to be the case. Rushing back to the stage, she remarked, “I have never taken such a fast piss in my whole life.”
Turning to SZA, who’d just hobbled onto the stage with the aid of crutches and Lady Gaga, she continued, “SZA, you are everything to me. … You are the epitome of talent. You’re a lyricist. You’re everything … I like to downplay shit, but this? It’s a big deal. Thank you, everybody.”
