The Hip Hop community is rallying around DMX following a reported drug overdose.
According to TMZ, the Ruff Ryders legend OD’ed on Friday night (April 2) and went into cardiac arrest. DMX was rushed to a local hospital in White Plains, New York and is currently in critical condition as he fights for his life.
ABC7 spoke to DMX’s attorney, Murray Richman, confirmed he had a heart attack and was on life support but wasn’t clear on the drug overdose component.
“I received a call this morning that Earl Simmons was in the hospital, at the White Plains Hospital, and that he had a heart attack,” Richman. “I’m not sure how it was induced and that he’s on life support.”

DMX has been vocal about his struggles with addiction and mental health over the years. During an interview for the BET documentary The Ruff Ryders Chronicles, the 50-year-old rapper talked about his multiple personalities, albeit reluctantly.
“They’re different things,” he said. “There’s a few things, a few people in me and they get me through life. I wouldn’t want anyone to know anything. I don’t talk about them. You already got me talking about them. Nope. They’re there to get me through life. I don’t know if I made ’em or if God gave ’em to me, or maybe circumstances and situations did.”
In another interview, DMX admitted he was tricked into smoking crack at 14, starting his long path to substance abuse issues.
“A monster was born,” he said of that moment. “I wouldn’t do that to my worst enemy. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. Especially for someone that you supposedly love. Why would you do that?”
DMX has been to rehab numerous times, most recently in 2019. The veteran artist was seemingly on his road to recovery and planning on releasing his first post-prison album featuring Snoop Dogg, The LOX, Griselda and U2’s Bono sometime this year.

In high school, DMX was easily one of my favorite emcees and “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot” is without question one of the greatest debuts in hip hop history, and his catalog is a run to absolutely marvel at. An ICON of an artist. Prayers up for the dog DMX. Gotta pull through ??✊?
