Grammy Award-winning producer Boi-1da and Philly rap legend Meek Mill may just have a Latin crossover hit on their hands.
According to a report from NBC News on Thursday (January 27), the pair have joined forces with renowned recording artist Gloria Estefan for the reboot of her 35-year-old hit record “Conga.” The re-work also includes vocals from Latin Grammy Award-winning artist Leslie Grace.
In conjunction with a strategic partnership between artists and Bicardí rum, Boi-1da says the intention of “Conga” was to “recreate the track for our generation,” and says he wanted to remain true to the original sound of the record while re-making it.
“‘Conga’ is like a cult-classic, so in remaking it, I wanted to keep it authentic and true to the original” Boi-1da says. “I just made a kind of like a whole new beat around it with a little twist.”
Gloria Estefan and her group the Miami Sound Machine signed released “Conga” via Epic Records in 1985 on their 10-track Primitive Love album. The track gained traction and peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Estefan and group went on to release several mega hits including their 1988 chart-topping single “Anything For You.”
The Canadian sound architect also recently notched another blockbuster placement after lacing Russ with the beat for his “Ugly” collaboration featuring Lil Baby — which became the No. 1 most added song to urban radio during the week ending January 20.
The video for “Conga” will appear in a 30-second Super Bowl LV pre-programming ad, in addition to multiple other scheduled appearances throughout the month of February during NBA and NHL sporting events.
