Debates in Hip Hop are a common occurrence. People argue about who’s the greatest of all time, who’s the better lyricist, which album is the best and so much more that Hip Hop culture may never have a consensus on anything.
One of those debates is the “Queen of Rap,” which has been going on for years. Women from all different eras have been considered the greatest, such as MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Lil Kim and more. According to Young Money Entertainment, though, the “Queen of Rap” title wouldn’t be around if it weren’t for the first lady of their label, Nicki Minaj.
On Tuesday (September 7), the official Young Money Twitter page sent out a bold tweet regarding Nicki Minaj’s status as the “Queen of Rap,” and they weren’t taking any debates.
“The title of “Queen of Rap” didn’t even exist until @NICKIMINAJ did the tingz that she did,” the tweet read. “And the Queen ain’t done yet. Get on ya knees.”

The tweet drew a resounding response from fans who took sides on the matter. Some felt the claim was valid, while others thought other women were more fitting to carry the title.
“Shes the Queen & Hero of rap Weezy Hero & Goat of rap & Drake king of rap,” one fan tweeted.
“I expect nothing less Her third studio album is titled ‘THE PINKPRINT’ she set the standard,” another person wrote alongside a gif of Nicki adjusting her crown.
A third fan said, “I love Nicki but this is such an insult to the Missy Elliots, the Eves, the Lauryn Hills, the MC Lytes, the Da Brats, the Queen Latifahs, and the lil Kims, who at one point or the other have been the Queens of Rap in the last couple of decades.”

Nicki Minaj changed the game for women rappers when she blazed through the industry earning multiple awards, dropped multi-platinum singles and two No. 1 albums. In 2017, she surpassed Aretha Franklin for the most entries by a woman on the Hot 100 chart.
In June, Spotify announced her as the fourth member of RapCaviar’s Hip Hop Mount Rushmore of the 2010s, joining J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Young Money brethren Drake in the exclusive group.
Fans have been calling for a new Nicki Minaj album seeing it’s been three years since her last project, Queen. In May, she reissued her breakout 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty with three new songs, including “Seeing Green” featuring Lil Wayne and Drake. The Grammy-nominated rapper blessed fans with one guest feature all year on the remix to BIA’s “Whole Lotta Money.”
