New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Universal Hip Hop Museum (UHHM) Executive Director and President Rocky Bucano announced on Thursday (July 29) a series of Hip Hop centric concerts to occur at outdoor venues in New York throughout the month of August. Titled “It’s Time for Hip Hop in NYC,” the shows will showcase Hip Hop, Latin freestyle, dance, funk and more. The series is part of city-wide programming during NYC Homecoming Week beginning on August 14.
“You don’t want to miss the local, legendary talent performing throughout NYC Homecoming Week,” de Blasio said in a statement. “As we celebrate this Summer of New York City, we’re proud to partner with Rocky Bucano and the Universal Hip Hop Museum to bring these momentous concerts to our boroughs, free of charge. And if you get a ticket, you can go as long you have proof of your first dose of an approved COVID vaccine.”
Among the selected performers are Too $hort, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Slick Rick, EMPD, CL Smooth, Big Daddy Kane, Mobb Deep and more.

Each concert will take place in four of New York’s five boroughs in the Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens. The four boroughs all have their unique Hip Hop history and legacy with the culture being founded in the Bronx, Staten Island producing the Wu-Tang Clan, and the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens being home to some of the greatest rappers in NYC history.
National Hip Hop Recognition Day + Month Approved By United States Senate
New York isn’t the only part of the country celebrating Hip Hop’s birthday. The United States Senate unanimously passed a resolution on Thursday recognizing August 11 as national Hip Hop Celebration Day in the United States. Additionally, the month of August was recognized as Hip Hop Celebration Month and November 2021 as Hip Hop History Month.
