Atlanta, GA – Gunna looks likely to remain behind bars for the rest of the year, but that doesn’t appear to be dampening his spirits.
In a viral clip that surfaced online on Sunday (July 17), the Atlanta rapper, whose real name is Sergio Kitchens, was all smiles as he spoke to his godson over a video call from jail.
“Shorty look like a real playa, though,” Gunna joked over the phone while wearing a blue jumpsuit. The child, who was sat in front of a laptop next to his mother, smiled and babbled in response.

Gunna was indicted on May 9 alongside Young Thug and 26 others as part of a sweeping RICO case against their Young Slime Life (YSL) collective, who prosecutors have accused of being a “criminal street gang” behind a string of violent crimes – including murder and armed robbery — in Atlanta.
The DS4Ever hitmaker has been charged with one count of conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Prosecutors have tied him to the case due to him wearing YSL chains and sharing content on social media that allegedly promoted the “criminal” collective.
Gunna has twice been denied bond, with a Fulton County judge raising concerns about the 29-year-old rapper threatening or intimidating witnesses if he were released ahead of trial at his second bond request hearing earlier in July.
In an open letter penned from behind bars in June, Gunna maintained his innocence and vowed to “never stop fighting to clear my name.”
“For now, I don’t have my freedom. But I am innocent,” he wrote. “I am being falsely accused and will never stop fighting to clear my name! The picture being painted of me is ugly and untrue. My fans know I love to celebrate life, I love my family, I love travel, I love music, I love my fans. I have all faith that God will grant me justice for the purity in my heart and the innocence of my actions.”
A trial for both Gunna and Young Thug (who also remains in jail after being denied bond) has been set for January 9, 2023.
