Lil Baby’s 2017 Track 'Freestyle' Certified 3x-Platinum As Son’s 'Microphone Challenge' Goes Viral On TikTok

Two of Lil Baby’s songs were certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) this week. According to the RIAA website, this year’s “In A Minute” has been crossed the one million-mark, while 2017’s “Freestyle” has earned a triple-platinum certification.

The new certifications arrive just after Lil Baby’s 6-year-old son Jason Jones went viral with the TikTok “Microphone Challenge.” In the clip, Jones strolls through Lil Baby’s tour bus rocking a big chain, shades and white tee as he’s handed a bundle of cash. From there, he steps up to a PlayStation controller to use as his mic and proceeds to rap (nearly) every word to “Freestyle” from the Too Hard mixtape.

Lil Baby has come a long way since 2017. After delivering his debut album Harder Than Ever the following year, which landed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, he followed up with 2020’s My Turn featuring guest appearances from Gunna, 42 Dugg, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Wayne, Moneybagg Yo, Young Thug and Rylo Rodriguez.

Lil Baby Crowned ASCAP Songwriter Of The Year For 2nd Consecutive Year

The album quickly became Lil Baby’s first chart-topping album with over 197,000 total album-equivalent units sold in its opening week. The 20-track project remained in the No. 1 spot for five weeks, making it one of the best-selling albums of the year. He also won his first Grammy Award in April thanks to the Kanye West track “Hurricane” featuring The Weeknd.

Last month, Lil Baby became the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year for the second consecutive year for penning several chart-topping hits, including DJ Khaled’s “Every Chance I Get,” Drake’s “Girls Want Girls,” solo single “On Me,” Rod Wave’s “Rags2Riches 2” and Drake’s “Wants and Needs.”
