Pop Smoke‘s Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon saw a re-release on Monday (July 20) in honor of the late New York rapper’s 21st birthday. The original version featured a version of “Diana” featuring King Combs but without one of the track’s original feature acts, Calboy.
While Calboy’s verse does appear on the deluxe version of “Diana”, he recently sat down with HipHopDX to not only detail how the song came to be but also how he was set to hang out with Pop for the official “Diana” video shoot.
Pop and Calboy had worked together previously on the song “100K On A Coupe” and instantly recognized the hit potential of the song. “Everybody in the studio singing it,” Calboy says of the record. “Everybody saying ‘It’s hit, bro.’”
“The last time I chilled with him was the “100K” video shoot … we had the kids running off the school bus cause we were shooting a video,” Calboy says of the final time he hung out with Pop. “Then we were supposed to shoot the video for [“Diana”] out in LA, me, him and Combs. Then the day after that we got the news … I was in New York flying out the next day and before I took off, I found out [he died].”
Hours before Calboy’s plane took off, Pop Smoke was murdered in the Hollywood Hills by apparent robbers. Four individuals have been charged with murder in connection with the killing, including two juveniles.
When Calboy initially reacted to being removed from “Diana,” he alluded to the potential video shoot that never was.
“On Wesley grave y’all bogus asf for taking me off pop smoke album …but then keep my fucking adlibs,” he wrote via Twitter. “two days before my boy passed away we was planning a vid wit me combs n him ..how y’all play it like tht ..ion respect that shit at all … @POPSMOKE10 out now!!”
