Lambchop will release their new album, ‘Punching The Clown’, on August 21st. The project marks a significant creative shift for the group, reignited after songwriter Kurt Wagner discovered a compelling piece of music on the radio—a soulful country lament deeply rooted in the ‘lining out’ tradition of church singing.
Originating in Scotland and famously preserved within the Western Isles, this unique vocal tradition migrated to Southern churches in the United States, serving as the atmospheric foundation for Lambchop’s latest collection of songs.
Led by Kurt Wagner, the recording sessions featured a collaborative ensemble including Andrew Broder on guitar, Justin Vernon on banjo, and a full choir directed by Blake Morgan. Produced by Ryan Olson, the album captures a distinct, hypnotic quality, particularly evident on the lead track ‘Weakened’, which is available to stream now.
The group is set to bring this new material to life during a UK tour this November, which includes two special performances at London’s Union Chapel accompanied by a 12-piece choir.
