The Oasis classic ‘Wonderwall’ produced one of the most memorable moments of the World Cup so far, when fans sang it back to the victorious England squad.
England kicked off their World Cup ’26 campaign in Dallas, emerging 4-2 victors over a stubborn Croatian team. A Harry Kane brace helped the side on their way, in their first tournament under the leadership of Thomas Tuchel.

The team went to salute the massed ranks of England fans at the finale, and some bright spark in the stadium decided to play the Oasis all-timer ‘Wonderwall’ as they did so. With the thousands of fans belting out the words, the shocked team were visibly emotional, producing a moment of union between the players and their supporters.

The moment went viral, with some suggesting ‘Wonderwall’ has become a new English anthem. Can it push aside ‘Sweet Caroline’? The 1969 Neil Diamond warhorse is a tried and tested favourite of the England support, but perhaps memories of last year’s euphoric Oasis re-union can push the Manchester band into the mix.
Oddly enough, Noel Gallagher isn’t even that big a fan of the England team. A footie fanatic and one of Manchester City’s most famous adherents, he reflected back in 2016: “No, I’m not an England fan, though it would be great if England won anything, it would be truly staggering. I don’t consider myself to be English, my parents are Irish, my wife’s Scottish, my children have got some Scottish in them, but at the same time I don’t feel a hundred percent Irish either because I was born in England.”
He added, “So internationally I don’t really support anyone, but if England were playing Scotland tomorrow I would be supporting Scotland. If Ireland were playing England, I would be supporting Ireland, same for Wales, but I’ve been to England matches and it’s always a good laugh.”
