A brand new Gang Of Four and Andy Gill tribute album has been announced.
The project was kicked off by the band’s Andy Gill before his death earlier this year, and was brought to conclusion by the remaining members, alongside the guitarist’s widow Catherine Mayer.
‘The Problem Of Leisure: A Celebration Of Andy Gill And Gang Of Four’ was initially slated for release in 2019, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of seminal debut album ‘Entertainment!’ before being pushed back.
Out in May 2021, guests include a range of different artists, with the first single landing on January 1st – what would have been Andy Gill’s birthday.
The single will be a version of ‘Natural’s Not In It’ performed by Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave) and System Of A Down’s Serj Tankian.
“Andy Gill was one of a handful of artists in history who changed the way guitars are played,” Tom Morello comments. “His band Gang of Four were just incendiary and completely groundbreaking with Andy’s confrontational, unnerving and sublime playing at the forefront. His jagged plague-disco raptor-attack industrial-funk deconstructed guitar anti-hero sonics and fierce poetic radical intellect were hugely influential to me.”
Damien Hirst made the artwork for ‘The Problem Of Leisure’, while Andy Gill’s widow Catherine Mayer has shared a video introducing the album.
