English songwriter Stephen Fretwell returns with new album ‘Busy Guy’.
The lauded songsmith was absent without leave for around a decade, stepping back from music to focus on his family.
He never quite said farewell to the muse, however, and work continued – albeit slowly – in private, away from the public gaze.
Pairing up with Dan Carey last year, the two began to construct something new, working with songs Stephen Fretwell had long since perfected.
Recorded in Soho’s Dean Street Studios in a matter of hours, new album ‘Busy Guy’ will be released on July 16th via Speedy Underground.
“I was so fired up, I just rattled off the songs,” the songwriter comments. “I assumed it was the run-through, but Dan said he thought we’d got it.”
The title is a reference to an old in-joke, as Stephen explains:
“Years ago, Dan asked why I always carried a copy of The Guardian, a notebook and a pen when all I did was go to the pub. I said: if you go to the pub at 11am with a newspaper, a notebook and pen, you look like a busy guy rather than a pisshead. It became a joke between us. The joke too is that I didn’t do any music for years.”
Beautiful new single ‘Embankment’ is online now – check it out below.
