Mattiel returns with her latest single, ‘Heartbreak Heatwave,’ marking a significant new chapter for the artist. Now firmly rooted in Italy, the musician is set to bring her evocative sound back to London on November 16th for an intimate, one-off performance at the George Tavern.
The Atlanta-born artist spent a formative period in Los Angeles, and the city’s distinct, often suffocating atmosphere serves as the primary inspiration for her new material. Steeped in the classic Laurel Canyon style, ‘Heartbreak Heatwave’ functions as a ‘feel-good song for bad times.’ Lyrically, the track navigates the self-doubt that plagued Mattiel during her time in the city, while musically, it presents an upbeat, driving rhythm.
Out now, the single finds Mattiel relishing her newfound distance, appreciating the mythos of Los Angeles while simultaneously carving out her own path. Reflecting on the inspiration behind the track, she explains, “’Heartbreak Heatwave’ is a feel-good song about feeling bad in LA. I wrote it after seeing enough of Silver Lake’s bar culture and the exclusive Marmont parties. Everyone’s competing for attention, most conversations are meaningless, and everyone is always looking for a way to use everyone else.”
She continues, “Could I have tried to climb the music industry ranks? Sure. But life is short. I’ve never had nepo-baby resources, and I’d also like to keep my sanity. So in 2022, I sold most of what I owned and moved to the other side of the world instead. Now I live in a little medieval Italian town on a mountain. It’s the freest I’ve ever felt, and it’s the reason I have new music to share. To put it bluntly, Hollywood can kiss my ass.”
