Roe Vs. Wade Supreme Court Ruling On Abortion Sparks Outrage — & Action — From Hip Hop Community

Posted by

Millions of Americans woke up to the news the 1973 Supreme Court ruling Roe Vs. Wade had been overturned. Up until that point, the Constitution of the United States had generally protected a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose to have an abortion. But now, each state has the freedom to ban them and many already have, including Kentucky, Louisiana and South Dakota.

On Friday (June 24), former president Barack Obama was among the many who were heartbroken to learn women’s rights over their own reproductive health were essentially erased. As Obama explained in tweeted, “Today the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans.”

Protests have erupted across the county, with many denouncing the conservative justices Donald Trump put in place before his presidency ended. Of course, social media has also exploded with reactions to the historical ruling. From Alicia Keys, who called it “fucking bullshit,” to Lizzo, who pledged $500,000 to Planned Parenthood, celebrities are using their platforms to speak out and spark action.

Why Is Male Rappers Calling Women ‘Bitches’ Still A Thing In 2020?

For example, Megan Thee Stallion used her giant platform, which includes 29 million followers on Instagram, to provide a link to both Planned Parenthood Action and Bans Off Our Bodies. She wrote in the caption, “The court has failed us all — but we won’t back down. I’m going to keep fighting because everyone deserves access to the care they need. Join me and @PPact: http://BansOff.org. #bansoffourbodies.”

But that was just the beginning. Public Enemy, CHIKA, Rage Against The Machine, Steve Rifkind and Questlove, among others, also used their social media to voice their opinions. Check them out below.
