Nipsey Hussle was fatally shot outside of the Marathon Clothing Store in South Central Los Angeles on March 31, 2019, leaving a gaping hole in the Crenshaw neighborhood that will never be filled. On the two-year anniversary of his tragic murder, the celebrated rapper has become a trending Twitter topic as the social media platform lights up with tributes to the inimitable rap figure.
From Rick Ross and celebrity jeweler Ben Baller to G-Eazy and Statik Selektah, the Hip Hop community came out in droves to remember Nipsey Hussle and the contributions he made to not just Hip Hop but also to the world in general. During a recent interview with HipHopDX, veteran music journalist Rob Kenner, author of The Marathon Don’t Stop: The Life & Times of Nipsey Hussle, spoke about Nipsey’s undeniable impact.
“He was completely self-made and built a movement that will go on, I think, forever,” Kenner said. “Nipsey is one that is really singular in Hip Hop. I don’t think there’s been anyone who accomplished exactly what Nipsey Hussle did in Hip Hop.
“It was his honesty. He was 100 percent real on every communication and every aspect of his life — from his personal relationships to the way he conducted business. He was just 100 percent bullshit free and completely committed to standing on his words.”
Those sentiments are echoed on social media across the board. As Rick Ross said, “Nipsey Hussle, your presence is stronger than ever, brother.”
Nipsey delivered numerous mixtapes over the years but just one studio album, Victory Lap, which arrived in February 2018. Although it initially debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, it reached a new peak of No. 2 following his death. The Grammy Award-nominated project has since been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
