Tamaraebi has that soulful appeal.
A vocalist who is steeped in vintage R&B – everyone from Marvin Gaye to the Quiet Storm era to D’Angelo crop up in conversation – he’s also dedicated to ploughing his own path.
New EP ‘Spectrum’ lands on May 19th, and it’s a vivid depiction of a talent in bloom, with Tamaraebi allowing his old school influences to intersect with some deeply personal moments.
Take new slomo cut ‘Brown Angel’. A seductive piece of neo-soul that arrives with some psychedelic influences, the sumptuous sonics is matched to that preening, powerful vocal.
Tamaraebi describes it as “a stoner’s love song”, before adding: “‘Brown Angel’ is a modern-day psychedelic blues song with hip-hop and R&B undertones…”
The video has some serious retro leanings, with director Tatenda Jamera working closely with the songwriter on the concept.
He comments: “We shot it in an old pub in Peckham at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests last year. I wanted to do something visually that contributed to black art and also celebrated the varied beauty of blackness – from a fuller figured model to really dark-skinned ones. I wanted everyone to enjoy the beauty of blackness in its natural element, no matter what race they were.”
Tune in now.
