After teasing The Notorious B.I.G. NFT collection in March, crypto platform OneOf has finally given their highly anticipated collection a release date.
The Christopher Wallace Estate first announced the collection back in March and said it’d be done in partnership with OneOf, a Web3 company led by Quincy Jones. After months of silence, details about the collection have finally emerged. Dubbed the Sky’s The Limit collection, the NFTs will be unveiled in their entirety on OneOf’s website on July 25.
The main focus of the set will be 3D characters inspired by The Notorious B.I.G.’s style and lyrics, and anyone who purchases one of these figurines will gain the rights to license audio of a legendary 1989 Biggie freestyle that he gave on a Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn street corner at just 17 years old. The audio has previously never been available to sample or download.
“Biggie’s music is a very important part of hip-hop culture and it’s global impact,” said Wayne Barrow, manager of Voletta Wallace/the Notorious B.I.G.’s estate in a statement. “Our business partner, Elliot Osagie of Willingie Inc, came up with the concept of coming together with OneOf to share the infamous freestyle that showcased to the world the icon that Biggie would soon become through an NFT, and sharing it with his fans in this way we are certain would make him proud.”
Joshua James, OneOf Co-Founder & COO, added that this NFT collection represented a major shift in the culture.
“We named this collection Sky’s the Limit because we believe this is a watershed moment in NFTs where seminal artists like Biggie and their truest fans can drive culture and drive value together,” he said. “We’re thrilled to work with The Christopher Wallace Estate to honor Biggie’s enduring legacy, in web3 and beyond, and we have some amazing surprises for NFT holders along the way.”
The collection was announced on the heels of Biggie Small’s 50th birthday, which his home town rang in with fervor. On May 21, the Empire State Building lit up in red and white and featured a spinning crown around its mast to pay respects to The Notorious B.I.G.’s multi-platinum debut album Ready to Die. Barclays Center in his home borough of Brooklyn also broadcasted a montage above the arena’s entrance compiled of B.I.G.’s biggest tracks, and The Lincoln Center hosted an orchestral tribute to the rap legend on June 10.
