In video clips shared across social media, the artist can be heard stating that he “doesn’t recognise the offence” for which he was detained.
The arrest has drawn immediate attention from advocacy groups, including Defend Our Juries, who highlighted the contrast between Del Naja’s previous political engagements and his current legal situation. The group noted in a statement: “Last June, Andy Burnham was on a platform with Del Naja in support of the Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty, praising his ‘clarity and leadership.’ Today, he’s having Rob arrested under the Terrorism Act for holding a piece of paper.”
The organization further suggested that this incident may signal a broader crackdown on demonstrations, adding, “Tomorrow, hundreds will replicate Rob’s brave action near the same location. Today’s arrest gives an indication that police will be making a lot of arrests tomorrow.”
