A Legal Defense Takes Shape

The legal battle surrounding Memphis rapper Pooh Shiesty has taken a new turn as his lead attorney, Bradford Cohen, pushes back against the government’s portrayal of his client’s actions. In a recent interview on Law and Crime’s Sidebar with Jesse Weber, Cohen addressed the prosecution’s claims that Pooh Shiesty and his father visited a Staples store to print a contract that Gucci Mane was allegedly coerced into signing at gunpoint.

Cohen dismissed the prosecution’s theory, framing the visit to the office supply store as a routine professional activity rather than a criminal act. “I don’t even care if they’re at Staples,” Cohen stated during the discussion. “They are going to a recording studio. Normally, my clients usually print off the lyrics for different individuals. If you have five individuals that are going to be on one record, and they each have a section or a part, they’ll usually print those things off.”

Challenging the Prosecution’s Burden

The attorney emphasized that the defense’s primary objective is to hold the government accountable for the evidence they present. By questioning the narrative surrounding the Staples visit, Cohen aims to create a robust defense strategy that forces the prosecution to substantiate their allegations with concrete proof rather than circumstantial claims.

“We have to create the defense and create a way to make sure that [the government] is held to their burden,” Cohen continued. “So, it doesn’t matter what they say. It matters what they have.”

The Case Against Pooh Shiesty

Pooh Shiesty, along with his father, Big30, and six other individuals, faces serious charges related to an alleged robbery and kidnapping incident involving Gucci Mane at a Dallas recording studio this past January. Prosecutors allege that the group held a business meeting that escalated into a violent confrontation, during which Pooh Shiesty reportedly brandished a firearm and demanded that Gucci Mane sign a contract release form.

The stakes for the defendants are exceptionally high, with all nine men facing the possibility of life in prison if convicted. Following a court appearance last week, Pooh Shiesty was denied bond and remains in federal custody as the case proceeds.
