Latto Reveals Postpartum Depression Led to Her Retirement Announcement

In a candid new interview with Apple Music, Latto has shed light on the personal struggles that prompted her recent, widely discussed announcement that she was retiring from the rap game. The conversation, which premiered on Apple Music’s YouTube channel on May 29, 2026, features the artist speaking with journalist Nedeska Alexis about the complexities of balancing new motherhood with the demands of a high-profile music career.

Latto, who officially confirmed the birth of her daughter with 21 Savage on May 18, admitted that she was navigating the challenges of postpartum depression during the lead-up to her latest project. “I was overwhelmed. I’m experiencing motherhood for the first time. I’m dropping my album, my last album that I owe the label. So, it’s just like I was going through it that day,” she explained.

The Atlanta-based rapper emphasized that her retirement post was a reflection of a specific moment of vulnerability rather than a permanent career decision. “Today’s a good day. I wouldn’t say I’m retiring today. Talk to me next week and I might say, ‘Nah, that sh*t was for real,'” she added. “I’m going through it. And hey, listen, I crashed. It is what it is. I’m not trying to be perfect anymore. I crashed. It is what it is.”

The release of her new album, Big Mama, which arrived on May 29, includes a heartfelt tribute to her newborn on the track “Mama,” featuring Jelly Roll. In the song, she reflects on her new chapter: “Now you look just like your daddy, but you got my curls/Can’t believe my life right now, I feel on top of the world.”
