According to reports, the artist passed away at his home in Ghana, Africa. The announcement of his death was shared by the MOBO Awards, an organization with which Sway shared a significant history. In 2005, he made history by becoming the first unsigned artist to win the Best Hip-Hop Act at the MOBO Awards, a monumental achievement that saw him surpass established industry heavyweights like 50 Cent and The Game.
In a heartfelt statement, the MOBO Awards reflected on his legacy: “Sway will always hold a special place in MOBO history. At a time when British rappers were still fighting to be recognised alongside their US counterparts, his win made a real statement about the talent, creativity and potential coming out of the UK.”
Born in Hornsey, North London, to Ghanaian parents, Sway was a foundational figure in the UK rap scene. He honed his craft as a member of the Phynix Crew and One before establishing himself as a formidable soloist. His 2006 debut studio album, This Is My Demo, earned him widespread critical acclaim, while his breakout single “Little Derek” solidified his place in the UK Top 40.
Beyond his own discography, Sway was a dedicated mentor who played a pivotal role in the early careers of numerous artists, including Ed Sheeran, Mr. Hudson, Tiggs Da Author, Riz Ahmed, Tinchy Stryder, Kaiser Chiefs, and KSI.
