J. Cole has officially set the record straight regarding his future in music, putting to rest persistent speculation about his retirement. In a wide-ranging conversation for GQ alongside his longtime A&R and authenticity-driven music executive Mark Pitts, the rapper clarified that while he once viewed his project The Fall-Off as a potential swan song, he is no longer operating under that mindset.

"I’m not using the word retirement at all," Cole stated during the interview. "I made The Fall-Off with intentions to [retire]. Like when I was making that album, I was making it like, ‘Damn, this gonna be my last sh*t.’ Luckily, by the time I got to actually finishing the album… it’s like, oh nah. I’ll never say I’ma retire. I don’t know whenever the next thing is gonna happen, but I’m definitely not gonna say no."

Reflecting on the Pressure from Jay-Z

Beyond his future plans, Cole took time to revisit his early days under the tutelage of Jay-Z. After signing to Roc Nation, Cole faced immense pressure to deliver commercial success. While he admitted that he occasionally struggled with the weight of those expectations, he now views that period as a vital catalyst for his artistic development.

"He gave me the space to find myself, 100 percent," Cole said of the hip-hop mogul. "He also had expectations and hopes of what I would do, and that pressure was spilling on me, but guess what? That was helpful too."

Cole specifically pointed to the era surrounding his 2013 album, Born Sinner, as a time of significant mental strain. However, with the benefit of hindsight, he recognizes that the push to meet high standards helped forge his identity as an artist. "He made a diamond," Cole reflected. "I would not have been able to become who I am today and where I ended up getting to had he not."

Looking Ahead

Currently, the focus for J. Cole remains on his ongoing The Fall-Off World Tour and prioritizing time with his family. Despite the busy schedule, he expressed a renewed interest in returning to his roots as a producer. As he continues to evolve, it is clear that Cole is not looking for an exit, but rather a new chapter in his storied career.
