Body Horror have officially opened the doors to their highly anticipated debut EP. The four-track project, titled At The Nepo, is scheduled for release on October 30th, with the lead single The Nepo A Go Go available to stream now.
Spanning across Powys, Tottenham, and Birmingham, the band occupies a unique sonic space where post-punk tension collides with the visceral energy of the London rave scene. Their sound has been described as a collision between The Prodigy and Viagra Boys, underscored by the dark, menacing atmosphere reminiscent of The Birthday Party.
The Nepo A Go Go was produced by Syd Kemp, whose impressive production credits include work with Olivia Dean, Jessie Ware, Caroline, Crack Cloud, and The Horrors. The track is built upon an industrial foundation, driven by a rolling, danceable beat. Welsh vocalist Gethyn Thomas delivers a clipped, rhythmic performance over serrated guitar lines, creating a hypnotic, relentless energy that builds throughout the song.
The lyrical focus is a direct critique of the nepotism prevalent within the London music industry. Rather than a standard protest song, the band frames the narrative within a fictional club setting. As the band explains, they have always been drawn to songs about specific places, but they wanted to subvert the trope to address systemic privilege.
“I’ve always liked songs about places,” the band explain. “Like Copacabana by Barry Manilow. They’re usually hokey. But I wanted to take a song about a fictional venue/club and try to use it to talk about the rampant nepotism I see in the London music scene.”
The EP is structured as a two-part narrative. “Part one, At The Nepo, is about entering a fictional club called The Nepo A Go Go,” the band notes. “And part two is a self-reflection while I’m at the venue and trying to address the bigger issues it conjures up: ‘just another Westerner with a seriously privileged appendage’.”
Body Horror have steadily built their reputation through consistent support from BBC 6 Music and BBC Wales, as well as backing from outlets like So Young and Hard Of Hearing. Having toured Europe with Alabama 3 and supported Maquina, the band continues to gain momentum. They have also collaborated with Faris Badwan, and their music has received airplay from The Horrors during their 6 Music residency.
At The Nepo is out October 30th.
