South London artist Poppy Ajudha shows different aspects of womanhood in the new, empowering self-directed music video for ‘Strong Womxn.’
Playing off the idea of an audition, the video begins with Ajudha reading a script before she breaks into song. She dresses in both traditionally masculine and feminine outfits, donning an oversized suit before switching to a puffy pink tulle skirt.
Ajudha shot the video in her living room, using light pink fabric as a backdrop. The background stays the same, with the focus on the singer-songwriter as changes her look – from dungarees to lingerie – showing there’s no right way to dress or be a woman.
“Sometimes it feels like everyday is an audition,” Ajudha shared. “We dress up, we dress down, we try hard… to look effortless, to look cool, to look intelligent, to look sexy, to be accepted, to be desirable, to rebel against being desirable.”
Ajudha defies this idea through her introspective and empowering lyrics, playing with the idea of what it means to be a “strong woman.” The track is electrifying, with Ajudha’s soulful and jazzy vocals making the tune an intoxicating feminist tune. It’s an act of solidarity, as Ajudha explores different social issues and brings light to often-overlooked struggles women face.
