Stephen Fretwell Returns With 'Oval'

Stephen Fretwell returns with new single ‘Oval’.

The songwriter’s work enjoyed immediate success, with his debut album – released on a major label – selling more than 100,000 copies.

An Ivor Novello award nomination accompanied his second album, while Stephen’s song ‘Run’ is familiar to millions through its prominent spot on the Gavin & Stacey credits.

Taking time out after becoming a father in 2011, Stephen Fretwell is now on the comeback trail, with his third album set to be released this summer.

Produced by South London audio boffin Dan Carey, the record will be released on the ever-vital Speedy Underground.

New song ‘Oval’ is out now, and lyrically it finds Stephen Fretwell dealing with adulthood, responsibility, and the commitment that comes with marriage.

A song about domesticity and the adjustments that involves, it explores the exchange of freedom for gentle pleasures that come with newfound goals.

“I think it is a song about marriage, the actuality of it, the responsibility of it, and the gamble,” says the songwriter. “When my girlfriend was pregnant with our first son, we moved to a flat near the Oval in London. As our marriage fell apart a few years ago, it was this simple song that was the only thing I had to stick in the ground and push on with making some new music.”

“I wrote the song about watching my wife look out of the window in that flat in Oval, looking at her new life as a mother, our new life as parents, and I was trying to show that in some way the beauty that we are gifted by becoming parents is often haunted by the loss of something, too.”

Tune in now.
