Track Of The Day 7/1 – John Smith

Posted by

John Smith opened 2020 on top of the world.

At ease with his family and friends, his touring schedule included hectic bursts of live performances, with up to 200 days marked down for live performances.

But then everything was wiped away. The pandemic halted his career, while his mother was diagnosed with cancer – then Smith and his wife lost a pregnancy.

Plunged into the depths, he responded by returning to his art, renewing his love with the simple release that songwriting can offer.

He explains: “With newfound pain coming from so many directions, dealing with the uncertainty it brings, I closed the curtains and picked up the pen, turning to song-writing as a lifeline…”

New single ‘Friends’ is part of his return. A full project is incoming, with this track – recorded at Real World Studios – shining a light on this frenetic year.

A song about the connections that sustain you, it’s a beautifully frank experience. Gilded songwriting with a melodic flair, it’s driven forwards by John’s resolute honesty.

“I wrote this song for my friends. Some of them feel more distant than others, after a year without contact. The ties that bind these friendships are not lost or forgotten. They’re still there, as tight as ever. I imagine a lot of people are feeling this way, to some extent…”

Tune in now.
