Anderson .Paak has secured his first ever No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Leave the Door Open,” his Bruno Mars collaboration as Silk Sonic.

“Leave the Door Open” takes the crown in its fifth week on the chart, after initially debuting at No. 4 following its March 5 release. Last week, the song gained 21.5 million U.S. streams (up 13 percent), sold 28,600 copies (up 138 percent) and attracted 59.1 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 9 percent).

.Paak reaches the No. 1 spot with just his second single to break into the Hot 100, having previously peaked at No. 89 as a featured artist on Eminem’s “Lock It Up.” As for Bruno Mars, he’s topped the chart seven other times with “Nothin’ on You,” “Just the Way You Are,” “Grenade,” “Locked Out of Heaven,” “When I Was Your Man,” “Uptown Funk” and “That’s What I Like.”

In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Anderson .Paak talked about the making of “Leave the Door Open” and its aim to make people feel good.

“When you get in and you can jam with someone and other artists that could hold it down and you’re bouncing, that’s different,” he said. “That’s the difference and you’re really creating a groove from scratch. You guys are trying to figure out what’s going to work. What’s the math behind this that’s going to get everybody feeling good? What is it? Is it too heavy? Is it not heavy enough? And especially with this song, it’s a song that requires so much patience and [delicatessens]. A lot of meat went into this song.”

He also spoke highly about collaborating with Mars and the struggle it often takes to make great music.

“This dude doesn’t listen to music like regular people, you know, people get lost? And he can’t, he can’t,” .Paak said. “A lot of people do collabs these days, but I don’t think they understand what it’s like to go in and get work with someone that’s challenging everything. Like, ‘Did we do this right? Did we do this right? Should we try this right?’ You know for me, a lot of it is about having fun, but he was really the first person, the first period of bringing it to my attention that sometimes you got to go through hell to get heaven.”

“Leave the Door Open” is expected to appear on Silk Sonic’s debut album, which was announced in February but doesn’t have a release date yet. Revisit Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak’s “Leave the Door Open” below.
