Coast Contra Make Late Night TV Debut On 'Jimmy Fallon'

Coast Contra made their late-night debut on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon on Monday (June 20), performing “Never Freestyle” and their Apt. 505 cut “Legacy” before the former dropped on DSPs at midnight.

The group, comprised of Eric Jamal, Taj Austin, Ras Austin, and RioLoz, rose to prominence off their freestyle, which they spit over J.I.D.’s 2017 single “Never.” From there, the group has attracted the attention of Hip Hop heavyweights, including Questlove who said on Twitter he hadn’t been this excited for a Tonight Show debut since Odd Future took the stage a decade ago.

Coast Contra dropped their debut Apt. 505 in March, and in May Dave Chappelle asked them to open up his show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California.

In an interview with Home Grown Radio, the group said it’s been a whirlwind since their “Never Freestyle” took off.

“Honestly, I’m just happy to be here,” Eric Jamal said. “I’m just living in the moment I’m accepting everything as far as like..things I wanna accomplish, I am honestly in a just this period of time of just acceptance. Like the Dave Chappelle show? I couldn’t even make that up.”

He continued, “When I was telling my brother and my sister I’m like, ‘Guess who want us to open,’ they were like, ‘I already know’ and I’m like, ‘No, you don’t know. This is a different one…’ So whatever God throw our way whether it’s a hurdle to get over or it’s a door for me to open, I’m like, I gotchu God.”
