Deep Sea Diver have shared their cover of Massive Attack‘s immortal ‘Teardrop’. The song originally appeared on the Bristol group’s seminal album ‘Mezzanine’, featuring the ethereal vocals of Cocteau Twins vocalist Elizabeth Fraser.
A track that has been covered countless times, ‘Teardrop’ remains a firm favorite for Deep Sea Diver, who felt compelled to record their own distinct interpretation. With the resonance of their acclaimed debut album ‘Billboard Heart’ still lingering, this new version leans into the band’s more openly emotive side, serving as a compelling exercise in unified creativity.
The release arrives ahead of the band’s upcoming Stateside shows alongside Sub Pop labelmates Nation Of Language. Reflecting on the significance of the track, Deep Sea Diver’s Jessica Dobson shared: “We have always loved the voice and spirit of Elizabeth Fraser; her collaboration with Massive Attack is one of my all-time favorite songs. I was stopped in my tracks as a kid the first time I heard it. It has a magic that is undeniable, and we wanted to live in that magic for a while and to show it to our audience.”
Dobson continued, “Doing covers brings us back to connecting us to what we love and as we are writing new songs, we are really trying to purely focus on things that we love and are drawn to, even if mysteriously, like this one. A mysterious beauty.”
