Julia Holter will release her new album, ‘Materia’, on August 21st. Following the success of her powerful, striking 2024 record ‘Something In The Room She Moves’, this upcoming release is framed as a companion piece, expanding upon the sonic world she established last year.
‘Materia’ features a collection of new songs written and recorded with her band during the intervals between her recent tours. The project also sees Holter revisiting and reworking ‘Material’—a track from her previous album—alongside other compositions that were first conceived during the sessions for her 2024 release.
The seven-track record was overseen by Holter herself. Fans can get an early taste of the project with the new single ‘Fantasy’, which is available to stream now. Discussing the track, Holter noted: “This song of seeming willful abandon was somehow the most laborious undertaking of the entire record—it took over a year and went through various transformations—and I love that contradiction. It’s dancey, it feels to me like a kind of conjuring. And amidst the momentum of reverie, there’s the line ‘blink at the light and hope to survive,’ because daydreams in a fascist state can be scary too. I was trying to find the right sanguine tempo.”
