Kid Abstrakt Pushed Through Kobe Bryant's Death To Make J-Zen's 'Vibrations' Single

French producer J-Zen has recruited West Coast MC Kid Abstrakt for his new single “Vibrations” (or “Vibrações” in Brazilian), which comes from his new album Standa Lone. Written in January, the song was only partially done when Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were killed in a helicopter crash on January 26.

It has a profound impact on the Los Angeles native but taught him a valuable lesson.

“When I heard J-Zen’s beat, I imagined having açaí on a hot summer day in Los Angeles,” he tells HipHopDX. “We wanted to capture a feel good vibe but also share a message about appreciating everything you have while it’s still right in front of you. After Kobe & Gigi passed, I knew I had to live life to the fullest every single day.”

J-Zen adds, “The original title of the instrumental was ‘Summer,’ so the whole idea was to make a track with a summertime vibe. It took a little longer because Abstrakt was in the studio when he heard that Kobe [Bryant] passed away. Abstrakt was born and raised in Los Angeles and Kobe’s passing had a big effect on him.”

Drawing inspiration from J. Dilla and Madlib, J-Zen crafted a perfect, laid-back beat for Abstrakt to ride. It’s the type of song that has the ability to uplift and cause pause for reflection at the same time.

Standa Alone arrived on June 19 and is available on all streaming platforms. Check out “Vibrations” up top and stream the album below.
