The Weeknd Begins Post-'After Hours' Era With 'Take My Breath' Visual

The Weeknd is ready to start the next phase of his storied career. The Toronto singer is gearing up to release his next studio album, and he’s kicking things off with a brand new single and music video to go along with it.

On Friday (August 6), The Weeknd unleashed “Take My Breath,” a disco pop-inspired record about someone having an intense infatuation with their lover. The Cliqua-directed video finds The Weeknd making his entrance at a nightclub where the drinks flow and people dance the night away. Abel comes across a woman who instantly catches his eye, and they dance while sharing breaths from an oxygen tank with each other.

As the new couple gets closer in an empty hallway, things get scary for The Weeknd. He kisses the woman before she traps him in her clutches and strangely sends him back to the club.

The Weeknd had plans to premiere the music video in IMAX this weekend, but officials pulled the visual from theaters due to the strong strobe lighting effects. He did manage to tease the song during a commercial for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which featured Sydney McLaughlin, Dalilah Muhammad, Athing Mu, and Gabby Thomas of Team USA.

“Take My Breath” is the beginning of the rollout for The Weeknd’s upcoming album allegedly titled The Dawn. In a new GQ feature, The Weeknd described his upcoming project as “the album [he’s] always wanted to make.” He also teased his hopes of collaborating with Tyler, The Creator and Kanye West.

“I’d love to work with Arca,” he said. “Arca’s great. I’d love to work with Kanye again. Especially on production. I got mad love for Tyler, the Creator, and what he’s doing right now. Tyler is funny, man.”

Kanye ended up putting The Weeknd on a track with Lil Baby on Donda titled “Hurricane.”
