Fugees rapper Pras Michel has officially surrendered to authorities, marking the beginning of a 14-year prison sentence for his role in a complex international money laundering and illegal lobbying scheme. According to a report published on May 1, 2026, the 53-year-old artist turned himself in on April 30 at the Federal Correctional Institution in Safford, Ariz.

This incarceration follows his April 2023 conviction on 10 federal charges, which included money laundering, conspiracy to defraud the United States, witness tampering, and illegal foreign lobbying. The legal proceedings have been extensive, with the rapper initially sentenced in a Washington D.C. federal court on November 21, 2025.

“Today is a painful day for Pras, for his family, and for everyone who believes in a fair system of justice,” said Pras’ spokesperson Erica Dumas in a statement. “Pras honors the legal process as he reports to begin his sentence. The FARA-related charges that led to his conviction are being vigorously contested on appeal, and his legal team believes the record will show that his rights were violated and the truth was obscured. This chapter is difficult but it is not his final one.”

Following his release, the Fugees member will be subject to three years of probation. Additionally, the court has ordered the forfeiture of $64 million allegedly linked to his illicit activities. Prosecutors successfully argued that Michel acted on behalf of billionaire financier Jho Low, who is accused of embezzling billions from the 1MDB Malaysian development fund, to illegally influence the U.S. government. The case also involved allegations regarding the facilitation of conduit campaign contributions during the 2012 re-election bid of former President Barack Obama.

Despite the gravity of his legal situation, Michel has remained active in the public eye leading up to his surrender. He was recently spotted at a concert in Los Angeles featuring Ye and his former Fugees bandmate Lauryn Hill. Furthermore, in March 2026, Michel dropped a lawsuit against Hill in which he had previously alleged that she leveraged his legal troubles to pressure him into a reunion tour.
