After a period of personal reflection and healing, Lil Nas X has officially returned with a poignant new song and music video titled “World’s Greatest!” This release marks a significant milestone for the artist, coming after he took time away from the spotlight to focus on his mental health following a bipolar disorder diagnosis and the heartbreaking loss of his mother.
Released on Thursday (Oct. 1), the six-minute visual was directed by Phillip Youmans and filmed in the rapper’s hometown of Atlanta. The video serves as a deeply personal narrative, blending scenes of Nas performing choreography in a dance studio with dramatized glimpses into his childhood. The project concludes with a touching dedication to his late mother, Tamikia Hill, featuring a moving voicemail from her that underscores the emotional weight of the track.
A Message of Resilience
On the track, Lil Nas X delivers a message of hope and perseverance. “I hope your dreams work out for you/I hope your green comes out the blue/I hope you learn to trust the pen/I’m a champion,” he sings, offering a glimpse into his current mindset.
The artist previously shared the inspiration behind the song on X, noting, “‘Walk by faith, not by sight’ was my mom’s favorite phrase to say. As I move through life it resonates with me more & more. This one’s for the ‘World’s Greatest!'”
Focusing on Mental Health and Healing
Back in June, the 27-year-old artist opened up about his journey, revealing that he had been seeking treatment for his mental health. “I’ve been in rehab for a few months, and since then I’ve been back at home… Trying to ground myself down to Earth and get out of my head. I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful,” he explained. He noted that he is feeling much better, creating with more freedom, and experiencing less fear in his daily life.
While he is currently taking a measured approach to his return to the recording studio, his fans are eager to see what this new chapter holds. Following the passing of his mother in late August, the artist shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, writing, “RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt.”
