The remarkable journey of how Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff transitioned from teenagers in Philadelphia to becoming one of hip-hop’s most influential mainstream crossover acts is officially being developed into a scripted TV series. The project, currently titled 215, aims to capture the essence of their rise to stardom during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
According to reports, Will Smith’s production company, Westbrook Studios, is spearheading the development of the series. The narrative is set to draw inspiration from Smith’s formative years in Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood. The show will follow a young rapper and DJ as they navigate the city’s burgeoning hip-hop scene, strive to secure a record deal, and grapple with the complex ways that sudden fame impacts their personal friendships and their connection to their hometown.
The duo first crossed paths at a house party in West Philadelphia in 1985. Their immediate musical chemistry led to the formation of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Their 1988 album, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper, proved to be a massive commercial success, cementing their status as pioneers of mainstream hip-hop. This foundation eventually propelled Smith toward his future as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable global icons.
Terence Carter, president of television at Westbrook Studios, emphasized the personal significance of the project in a recent statement. He noted that 215 is a meaningful endeavor because it celebrates Philadelphia during a defining era of hip-hop history and honors the authentic rise of the iconic duo. The series is currently in the development phase, with Westbrook Studios partnering with the Canadian production company The Malar Group. As of now, the project does not have a confirmed network, streaming home, cast, or release date.
