Brooklyn rapper Bobby Shmurda is celebrating a monumental personal milestone: his father’s release from prison after more than 30 years of incarceration. The news, which surfaced via the artist’s Instagram Story on Friday, June 19, marks the end of a long and difficult chapter for the family.
In a touching video shared with his followers, the 31-year-old rapper is seen sitting in the backseat of a car alongside his father, visibly moved by the reunion. “Nah, why my pops out,” Shmurda captioned the clip, capturing the raw emotion of the moment. A subsequent video showed the two together, with Shmurda lightheartedly teasing his father about his physical fitness, noting the muscular physique his father maintained despite the harsh realities of prison life.
The backstory of Shmurda’s father is one of significant hardship. He was arrested when the rapper was just two months old, eventually receiving a 120-year sentence on robbery and assault convictions. In a candid June 2025 interview with DJ Vlad, Shmurda reflected on his father’s past as a reputed drug kingpin in Miami during the 1990s. “My pops [was] one of those boys. So when they grabbed him, they grabbed him,” Shmurda explained, noting that his father’s prolonged absence forced him to mature rapidly and, ultimately, influenced his own path into the streets during his teenage years.
With his father now home, the pair is looking toward the future, aiming to reconnect and build a new legacy together. This reunion serves as a poignant reminder of the long-term impact of the justice system on families, a topic that has frequently intersected with the narratives of many figures in the hip-hop community.
