Breaking Barriers and Making “Big Plays”: Cakeswagg Reigns Over Boston’s Hip-Hop Scene

Fast-rising hip-hop artist, Cakeswagg, recently shared some insights into the creation of her latest single “Big Plays.” The Boston native admitted that one of the challenges she faced while writing the song was delivering a catchy chorus, explaining that as a rapper, she often focuses on the lyrics and forgets to leave a hook that people can catch onto and remember.

Cakeswagg reworked the chorus until she felt it had lines that people could use as “quotables.” The final version came out as such: “It’s still big cake I get it f*cking baking/ This ain’t no pop smoke but still f*cking shaking/ And you prolly won’t last if you hesitating/ Cuz don’t nobody hold the crown so that shits for the taking/ My b*tches choosey, we get boujee on you f*cking goofy/ Sorry Pooky, he a groupie, I ain’t pop no coochie/ If you get crazy, I can promise, you gon lose a few things/ I’m still sturdy, do some proving if you wanna move me.”

The music video for “Big Plays” is set in the 1920s, a time when many barriers and rules were broken, and a new age of music began. Cakeswagg chose this theme because she felt it was the perfect representation of her year and career going forward. She worked on the concept with her design team, consisting of a set designer, hair stylist, stylist, makeup artist, and herself.

As a woman and recognized talent representing the Boston hip-hop scene, Cakeswagg feels proud to showcase and represent the talent and individuality of the city. She believes that hip-hop’s versatility and adaptability will allow for continued longevity in the future. Her advice to anyone starting out as a singer-songwriter is: “to do it anyway. Don’t wait until you have all the right things or pieces before you start. Write the song, record the video, even if all you have is a cell phone. That’s more than enough.”

Cakeswagg draws inspiration from influential female rappers such as Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, Remy Ma, and Nicki Minaj, and plans to release more music in the upcoming months. Her most thrilling collaboration to date is the mixtape she released with DJ Whysham, one of the first female collaborative efforts for a full-length project in Boston. In the future, Cakeswagg dreams of working with Chance the Rapper and Tierra Whack.

Cakeswagg flexes her rap skills and knack for crafting memorable hooks in her latest single, “Big Plays.” The music video, which showcases her creative flair and meticulous attention to detail, complements the song perfectly. As a prominent female artist in the Boston hip-hop scene, she serves as a role model and source of inspiration for aspiring musicians, sharing her experiences and advice to help guide them on their journey.
