In a recent interview, Dame Dash has offered his perspective on the ongoing tension between Jay-Z and Ye. Dash expressed that he finds Jay-Z’s decision to address the Chicago rapper-producer in his recent Roots Picnic freestyle to be an appropriate response, particularly given the disrespect directed toward his children during a social media outburst last year.
During a segment on Art of Dialogue, Dash discussed the viral freestyle, noting that while he understands the motivation behind Hov’s lyrical retaliation, he also views the situation through a lens of empathy regarding Ye’s mental health. “Kanye is bipolar. He’s admitted he’s bipolar,” Dash explained. “I think people think just because he’s famous, that bipolar is different for broke people than it is for rich people. But yeah, I thought the kid thing—I wouldn’t do that. I wasn’t with that.”
Dash emphasized that while he believes Ye crossed a line by targeting the children of Jay-Z and Beyoncé, he also believes the responsibility lies partly with those in Ye’s inner circle. “If I was in front of Kanye, I’m like, ‘Now you went too far.’ But I know he’s sick,” he continued. “So, it’s just the people around him have to care enough about him to know that when he’s triggered and he’s not taking his medicine, he’s drinking and he’s not sleeping, that it’s probably going to be tragic the things he’s probably going to say.”
The controversy stems from a 2025 incident where Ye questioned the mental capacity of Sir and Rumi Carter. Although the Donda artist later issued an apology, the impact of those remarks remained a point of contention. During his performance at the Roots Picnic on May 30 in Philadelphia, Jay-Z appeared to issue a stern warning to his former collaborator, rapping, “You ever heard of a wunderkind? / My children is some of them, have you ni**as no shame?”
As the hip-hop community continues to process the fallout of these public exchanges, Dash’s comments highlight the complex intersection of personal boundaries, mental health, and the public nature of celebrity feuds.
