For 2019’s penultimate anniversary special, we are recognising the forceful consequences of those artists whose own earthquaking output is invested with nothing but integrity and originality, and who no doubt enjoy the resulting fall-out as much as we do!
The fearless creator FKA twigs, whose enigmatic yet meticulously curated and convention-defying abilities enthrall at every turn, is the first of this issue’s cover stars.
A global icon of innovation and a truly adventurous artiste, FKA twigs searches from within to present music that is intensely personal yet absolutely empowering. Her new album, ‘Magdalene’, finds her emerging boldly from a period of public turmoil to produce something revitalisng and inspirational.
“The narrative is one of growth,” she tells Clash, “and I think people are almost more interested in the tragic, fallen heroine, but that’s not at all my truth. I’ve actually gotten a lot of joy out of this – it’s been amazing, training and finding strength, in so many different ways. The journey was really beautiful, and I was really gentle with myself.”
Also featured in this issue is Sam Fender, Kindness, Ray BLK, Not3s, Stereophonics, J Rick, Take A Daytrip, Aitch, Jax Jones, and many more. Other covers to follow this week.
